Enhancing rural learning opportunities and skills development

Education is a critical pathway to breaking the cycle of poverty in rural Somaliland. GWDA recognizes that limited access to quality education, inadequate infrastructure, and low literacy rates continue to hinder development in many communities. To address these gaps, GWDA invests in school construction, skills training, youth development, and community education programs to empower children, youth, and adults with lifelong learning opportunities. Future Vision for Education GWDA aims to expand its education initiatives by: Building more rural classrooms and training centers Introducing mobile-learning or community-learning hubs Offering advanced vocational courses tailored to market needs Strengthening partnerships with educational ministries and NGOs Increasing sponsorships for children and youth The long-term goal is to create an educated, skilled, and self-reliant generation in rural Somaliland.

GWDA Services: Education & Vocational Training

A. Construction of Education Infrastructure

GWDA has directly supported rural communities by building essential educational facilities.
Examples include:

  • Construction of a Primary School in Kala-gooye Village
This school in Salahley District provides education access to children who previously walked long distances or remained out of school.

  • Extension and Building of 4 Classrooms for a Boarding School in Salahley District
This investment increases learning space and accommodates more students in rural areas where educational facilities are scarce.

One of GWDA’s flagship initiatives is the Child Sponsorship Program, which directly supports over 400 vulnerable children and orphans.

Support includes:

  • Payment of monthly school fees

  • Distribution of school uniforms

  • Provision of clothing and basic needs

  • Access to healthcare

  • Enrollment assistance and follow-up monitoring

This ensures marginalized children receive consistent education and do not drop out due to poverty.

Rural youth often lack opportunities for skills training, leaving them dependent on seasonal agriculture or informal work. GWDA addresses this through:

A. Technical & Vocational Skills Programs

Training areas typically include:

  • Tailoring & garment making

  • Handcrafts and artisanal production

  • Basic carpentry and construction skills

  • Small business management

  • Computer literacy (where available)

  • Livestock care and agricultural skills

  • Environmental management and eco-friendly practices

These programs equip youth and women with practical, employable skills that increase their income and self-sufficiency.

B. Community-Based Training & Awareness Programs

GWDA integrates education into its broader development work by providing:

  • Training on environmental protection

  • Awareness on WASH (water, sanitation, hygiene)

  • Human rights and gender equality workshops

  • Farmer training on improved agricultural methods

  • Nutrition and child health education

These trainings help rural communities gain knowledge necessary for healthier, more productive lives.

Women and girls often face additional barriers to learning. GWDA ensures inclusive access by:

  • Prioritizing women in vocational programs

  • Providing literacy support

  • Offering livelihood training for mothers

  • Creating safe learning spaces for girls

  • Integrating gender sensitivity into all training programs

  • Awareness campaigns on health, environment, water safety, and social rights

  • Youth mentorship and leadership programs

Education is not limited to classrooms; it is embedded into GWDA’s rural development approach.

Skills training opens up pathways to employment and entrepreneurship.
